Do you prefer geldings or mares or stallions?

I was just wondering because I’ve met a lot of people who **** mare and a few people who love them. Personally, I love mares! Geldings are alright as long as they aren’t lazy, but I like mares better. It seems like it takes a long time to build a bond with them, but once you have their trust they’ll do anything for you. Plus I love their attitude! It makes the ride so much more fun! I love horses with spunk. I haven’t ridden a stallion yet, but I’m wondering what they are like. I have dealt with a few colts before, but that it. So which do you like better? Geldings, mares, or stallions?
Little Bit: I know what you’re talking about! I have a 6yr old TB mare, and sometimes it seems like she loves me and she trust me, but its really easy to break the bond with her cause I’ve only had her 6 months. It seems like when something scary happens to her, she turns to me though because I was riding her one day and she tripped. She got a face plant in the ground and I leapt off. She came with in 4 inches of stepping on me, and when i got up she was standing looking at me, and when I walked up to her she buried her head in my chest like ” MOMMY!!!!! Ahhhh!!!! What happened?!?!?!” I was like awwwwww. But trust me. Once you get that bond with your mare, there isn’t anything better! =)
I know what everyone is talking about with the mares don’t like me thing. They like some people, and **** others! lol. I tend to get along with mares really well. But they do listen. You just can’t be as gentle with them as you are with a gelding. They love to intimidate you! If you make them listen, they will mostly listen better than most geldings.

    I like them all, I don’t have a preference.Lol.

  2. Sarah T Says:

    No preference :)
But I love my gelding :)

  3. Future Olympic Equestrian Says:

Geldings! I ♥ mine to death! He’s got spunk and Thoroughbred blood! He’s earned the nickname Pig and he deserves it. Just yesterday while we were jumping my trainer said that she honestly thinks that he’ll do anything for me, he just doesn’t know what I want sometimes. I’ve ridden a stallion a couple times, of course Flashy defies all stallions reputations! He’s an incredible Western Pleasure pony and is as calm as can be. He has his stallion moments but he’s awesome!

  4. ♥*~Country Girl~*♥ Says:

i like geldings cuz they dont go in heat and get snotty, and they are mostly calm… But i own a mare also and 2 geldings i notice my geldings are more calm and relaxed she is kinda snotty sometimes… not really shes really nice but sometimes a little moody.

  5. Little Bit Says:

Like you said building a bond with mares is hard i have one and OMG i just feel so stupid around her because we just aren’t close (if that makes any sense) I personally would probably prefer Geldings but I would probably change my mind once my mare and I get that special bond. I love her.

  6. i see cute vampires. Says:

I like geldings better because they like me.
some mares like me but most dont.
Geldings are loving and always want ur attention

  7. Karma Says:

I don’t have a preference it all depends on their personality. :)

  8. Bre Says:

Mares are kind of moody and do NOT like to listen, unless god gave you the miracle of being easily attatched to one.
Geldings are my FAVORITE. They are calm, sweet, full of personality, and willing to please somebody that they know.
    Stallions are… too hyper.

  9. Horses&Softball_4_Life Says:

I like geldings more. Mares and stallions tend to be high end. BUT it depends on the horse. My grandma has an appaloosa stallion that acts just like a gelding(except when a mare is in heat), I can get in the corral and brush him, pet him, play with him, and he is really gentle…It all depends on the horse…

  10. System D Rail Says:

In general the geldings that I have worked with have been more stable and even tempered than the mares I have worked with. That said, my first horse (who I still have) is a mare and I would not trade her, or the hardships she and her “mare ‘tude” have put me through. I have such an incredible bond with her. Not all mares are “mareish” though, some are perfectly sweet. I have two studs at my place (and two stud donkeys) and they are all very nice horses. Not typical stallions at all, at least when it comes to them being handled.

It realy comes down to the individual horses personality. I dont think twice about going into either of the studs pens to visit with them, but any other stud I would not do that.

  11. Jordan G Says:

i like mares and geldings but stallions show off if a mares is around.

  12. Aisley M Says:

I prefer Geldings. They are alot nicer. Mares are tempermental and picky and like to rule the herd. Stallions can be calm, but also very hyper. I just prefer geldings! My own thougths!

  13. Amy Says:

My first two horses were mares and they were both horrible to me. I wasn’t very experienced with horses and they usually walked all over me (I’m aware that that was more my fault than theirs). My next horse was a gelding and while he was very spooky around certain things and liked to play games, he seemed to respect me more. My fourth horse was a little four month old filly. I can’t imagine not having this filly (now a mare) in my life. Her name is Fancy and she trusts me completely and I trust her. I’m not sure if it is because I got her when she was so young and we have had years to get to know each other or if we are naturally good for each other. Either way, I absolutely love my mare. I can do just about anything with her and she doesn’t even bat an eye. She trusts me to take care of her and vice versa. I can take her over and around obstacles that she has never seen before without a single problem and I can do silly things with her like cover her eyes and she doesn’t mind. I still have the gelding and Fancy as well as another mare. To answer your question, I think I like mares and geldings with about the same intensity (maybe mares a little more). The only experience I have had with a stallion was not a good one so I don’t particularly care for them and their flighty nature.

  14. Jessi M Says:

I prefer geldings because they are much calmer than mares. Also, mares can be picky, tempermental and like to rule the herd. Some stallions are calm but others are WILD!!!

  15. Daisy G Says:

Geldings For sure!!!! Mares go through PMS, can be snotty and moody, stallions are a whole diffent ball game, and geldings are compeitive friendly and dont go through PMS! basically there mood stays the same, they are big sweet hearts!

  16. faith_4_him Says:

I have a mare and her colt who was gelded a few weeks ago. The mare has a big attitude but she is starting to warm up to me. I would have to say I love them both.

  17. nonsense1979 Says:

I’d take a mare anytime over a gelding or a stallion. they tend to be more alert and up for more challenges. Geldings have their pluses, if you want a predictable ride. But I prefer the challenge I guess. I try to have more fun with them, no matter what is going on, heat, “mare pms” or whatever is happening. We all have bad days, they will too at times. mares or geldings, they too have bad days on occasion.

  18. Calamity Jane Says:

Geldings all the way. I like to look forward to going out to the pasture and finding the same horse day after day. A mare is a surprise every week (In my opinion). Stallions really can’t be trusted and your can’t put your guard down around them when around other horses.
I guess I just I just like to be lazy and relaxed at this point in my life.
There was a day when I would ride anything even it it’s eyes glowed red, but those days are over. Dang it!

  19. big country Says:

i have 4 geldings a mare and a stud if i had to pick the gelding they are good horses they dont act up when mares are in heat they arent that dominant they are great horses for anyone noow they mares and stud get moody but i do agree with you on your last point if you get a mare who likes you they are like a loyal dog they follow you everyy where and love you to the end but if you like a horse with juice a stud usally gives a fun time they buck if they smell a mare in heat personally i love a rough horse
there is nothing funner than when they buck

  20. Atigun Says:

    Geldings, there always so sweet.

  21. -danii Says:

Personally, Im a gelding girl… I’m sorta stereotyping the mares and stallions here but with a gelding then I know there’s no mood-swings attatched.. but I havn’t had a propper experience with mares and stallions.. But my geldings are real gentlemen. : ) But each horse has thier own personality so I don’t want to stereotype any of them. So until I’ve had proper experience with them all, Im gonna go with hte geldings

  22. amz m Says:

Stallions are stereotyped as crazy and unpredictable.
    Mares, moody and bitchy.
    Gelding, evenly tempered.
The only experience I’ve had with a stallion is with a mini at my stables, and he’s a little sh!t, but hey that’s probably just him, he’s not particularly nice and he tries to kick you when you rug him (which is already hard to do seeing as he’s so small).
Most of the mares I’ve had experience with are quite moody and not really that nice. In saying that I bonded with a b!tchy one and she was an absolute hoon and I trusted her not to kick me even when she was an absolute ***** (even though she’d try and kick everyone else). And I leased a mare that I absolutely fell in love with. She didn’t have a mean bone in her body, she was so sweet, just really really nice. I also used to ride a mare that used to try and bite me when I saddled her and kick me etc. I hated her.
I know some really nice geldings, I know some really nasty geldings. I find geldings are very even.
My baby’s a gelding and if I was to buy another horse I’d probably look for a gelding unless it was a really nice evenly tempered mare. I do know a mare I’d like to buy, part of that reason is because she’s really lovely and my gelding’s like in love with her.

  23. TRASHCORE Says:

    i like all horses haha,
but i find stallions harder to work with,
    i have a gelding and a mare,
and the gelding has always been cooperative,
and the mare was very hard to handle when i first got her,
but now, she trusts me 100% and no matter where i take her,
so long as i don’t leave her alone she’s fine,
except, if i don’t go see her for a week she will get angry at me,
    like i left her.

but then again, all mares gelding and stallions are different.

  24. Emily Says:

    i love them all!

my gelding is my favorite but each gender has its own perks.

geldings are usually laid back and easy to get along with.
mares are usually spunky and know how to take care of themselves, and like you said, they will do ANYTHING for you once you have the relationship.
stallions are very interesting. they are EXTREAMLY smart and you have to be careful with how you askt them to do things but once you do theres nothing like it.

  25. Kiri Silvren Says:

Stallions. I’ve got the guts to ride a high-spirited black arabian-thourobred crossed stallion named Rain Devil. He’s hell on four hooves a lot of the time, but he’ll jump the moon if I ask him. Stallions are hard to ride due to their onery natures, but if you can, they’ll win every time. I’ve got shelves of trophies and ribbon to attest to that.

  26. Catriona X Says:

Hm Well I Have A Gelding At The Moment But I Love Mares Always. They’re Attitude Is So Good. I Love A Horse With A Big Character And I Think Mares Are Like That. :)
And Once You Have Built A Bond With A Mare It Is So Special And I Also Like Having The Thought That When You Have A Mare You Know That It Will Never Go Half As Well For Anyone Else As Much As It Does For You;)

Like My Last Mare Who Unfortunately Went Back To Her Owner. Long Story. Would Be A Bit Cheeky With Me And Sometimes Put In A Little Buck Or Rear But Nothing Bad But For Anyone Else She Would Gallop Around Like An Idiot. And Same To Catch I Would Call Her And She Would Come Galloping And Let Me Catch Her. For Some People She Would Just Run Away And Buck :P .

I Will Always Love Mare More. :)
